Ingredients
Scale
- 6 slices of thick bread (such as brioche or challah)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup of milk (use whole or any milk of your choice)
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg (optional)
- 2 tablespoons of butter (for cooking)
- 2 apples (peeled, cored, and thinly sliced)
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (for the apples)
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
Preparing the Apple Topping
- Prepare the Apples: In a medium-sized bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Cook the Apples: In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the apple slices and sauté for about 5 minutes until they begin to soften.
- Flavor the Apples: Sprinkle the brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon over the apples. Stir to coat the apples evenly and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the apples are tender and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
Preparing the French Toast
- Beat the Eggs: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
- Soak the Bread: Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well-coated. Allow the bread to soak for about 10 seconds per side.
- Cook the French Toast: In the same skillet used for the apples, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Place the soaked bread slices in the skillet and cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Assemble the Dish: Once the French toast is cooked, top each slice with a generous helping of the apple mixture.
