Ingredients
Scale
For the Hearty Casserole Base:
- 1 pound Ground Beef: Ground beef is the protein powerhouse of this casserole, providing a rich and savory base. You can use ground chuck (80/20 blend) for a richer flavor, or lean ground beef (90/10 or leaner) for a healthier option. If using leaner ground beef, you might want to add a tablespoon of olive oil when browning to prevent dryness. You can also substitute ground turkey or ground chicken for a lighter variation, but ground beef is traditional for Hobo Casserole.
- 1 medium Onion, chopped: Onion provides an aromatic base and savory depth to the casserole. Yellow or white onions work well. Chop the onion into small dice so it cooks evenly and blends into the casserole.
- 2 cloves Garlic, minced: Garlic adds a pungent, aromatic flavor that enhances the overall taste of the casserole. Fresh garlic cloves are recommended for the best flavor. If you must substitute, you can use ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, but fresh garlic is preferable.
- 1 (10.75 ounce) can Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup: Cream of mushroom soup is a classic pantry staple that provides creaminess and richness to the casserole, binding the ingredients together. For a lower-sodium option, look for “reduced sodium” cream of mushroom soup. You can also substitute with cream of celery soup or cream of chicken soup, though cream of mushroom is most traditional. For a vegetarian option, cream of mushroom soup made with vegetable broth is available.
- 1 (10 ounce) can Diced Tomatoes and Green Chilies (like Rotel), undrained: Diced tomatoes and green chilies add a touch of acidity, sweetness, and a mild kick of spice to the casserole. Using undrained tomatoes adds moisture to the dish. Rotel brand is commonly used, but any brand of diced tomatoes and green chilies will work. If you prefer less spice, use mild Rotel or regular diced tomatoes and omit the green chilies, or use a can of plain diced tomatoes and add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a hint of heat.
- 1 (15 ounce) can Green Beans, drained: Green beans add a vegetable component and a slightly tender-crisp texture to the casserole. Canned green beans are convenient and commonly used in Hobo Casserole. Make sure to drain them well to avoid excess liquid in the casserole. You can substitute with fresh or frozen green beans (blanched before adding to the casserole), but canned are traditional and convenient.
- 1 (15 ounce) can Corn, drained: Corn adds sweetness and a pleasant texture to the casserole. Canned corn is convenient and works well. Drain the corn thoroughly. You can substitute with frozen corn (thawed) or fresh corn kernels (cut off the cob).
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce: Worcestershire sauce adds a depth of savory, umami flavor to the casserole. It enhances the beefy taste and complements the other ingredients.
- ½ teaspoon Dried Thyme: Dried thyme adds a subtle earthy and herbaceous note that enhances the overall flavor profile of the casserole, complementing the beef and vegetables. You can substitute with other dried herbs like oregano or Italian seasoning.
- Salt and Black Pepper, to taste: Salt and black pepper are essential for seasoning and enhancing the flavors of all the ingredients in the casserole. Season generously to taste.
Instructions
Step 1: Brown the Ground Beef and Sauté Aromatics
- Brown Ground Beef: In a large skillet or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Break it up with a spoon or spatula as it cooks. Cook until the beef is no longer pink and is browned. Drain off any excess grease. Draining excess grease is important to prevent the casserole from becoming greasy.
- Add Onion and Garlic: Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the browned ground beef. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until the onion is softened and translucent and the garlic is fragrant. Sautéing the onion and garlic softens them and enhances their flavor, creating a flavorful base for the casserole.
Step 2: Combine Casserole Ingredients
- Add Remaining Ingredients (except toppings): To the skillet with the browned ground beef, onion, and garlic, add the condensed cream of mushroom soup, undrained diced tomatoes and green chilies (Rotel), drained green beans, drained corn, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper.
- Stir to Combine: Stir all the ingredients together thoroughly until well combined. Ensure the soup is evenly distributed and all ingredients are mixed together.
Step 3: Transfer to Baking Dish and Bake
- Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the mixture from the skillet into a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread it evenly in the dish.
- Optional Topping (Cheese): If using shredded cheddar cheese, sprinkle it evenly over the top of the casserole mixture at this point.
- Optional Topping (Crispy Topping): If using crushed potato chips or French fried onions, sprinkle them evenly over the top of the casserole, either before or after the cheese (if using cheese). Adding the crispy topping towards the end of baking will prevent it from burning.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the casserole is heated through, bubbly around the edges, and the cheese is melted and golden brown (if using cheese). If using a crispy topping, ensure it is golden brown and crispy.
- Check Doneness: The casserole is done when it is heated through, bubbly, and the toppings are golden brown. You can insert a fork into the center to check if it’s heated through.
Step 4: Garnish and Serve
- Garnish (Optional): If desired, garnish the finished Hobo Casserole with freshly chopped parsley.
- Serve Hot: Serve the Hobo Casserole hot, directly from the oven. It’s best enjoyed warm and comforting.
